It is a good thing that you are now starting to actually drink more water but be careful about refilling that old used water bottle. A new study shows that you have to be careful about the water you’re drinking and were it is stored. The germs in a reusable water bottle are similar to a toilet seat believe it or not.
Scientific experts at the University level did a swab test of a group of athletes’ reusable water bottles to take a closer look at how clean they actually are. The results were shocking. In each water bottle, researchers found more than 300,000 colony-forming bacterial units per square centimeter. Now that number might not mean anything to all the non-scientists out there so for comparison, lets compare it to a used rubber dog toy which will have, on average, under 3,000 colony-forming units per square centimeter.
What the researchers want you to know is not that you should now be avoiding drinking water, it’s that you should be cautious about what kind of plastic water bottles you drink from and how often you clean them. Basically anything your mouth touches becomes infected with bacteria. So the less mouth-touching surface, the less opportunity for bacteria colonies to develop. Take a close look at the top of the water bottle. The slide top, screw top and squeeze top water bottle scored the highest on the germ scale. They were literally crawling with bacteria, most of which was harmful.
At the other end of the spectrum, the straw top water bottles scored significantly lower, providing accommodations for far fewer germs. So think closely bout the container you store your water in and make sure it is dishwasher safe. Wash it and rinse it often to avoid getting a mouth full of bacteria.
One last important note. Use a water filtration system to take out of the water that you store in the water bottle all that nasty containments.
